Masterpieces of the Hermitage

The Hermitage is the treasury of world art and the largest museum in Russia. Being one of the most famous museums in the world, visiting the Hermitage is included into every Saint-Petersburg touristic program. The museum occupies the territory of the well-known Winter Palace and 4 more palaces nearby. During our tour you will visit all of them.

The museum possesses the comprehensive collection of Italian Art. You will observe the changes in techniques and brushwork of the artists of the Renaissance epoch of the XIV-XIX centuries. We will introduce to you the works of world famous masters: Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Rafael, Titian, etc.

It is not a coincidence that the Hermitage is one of the largest museums in the world — you can find there the works of the artists belonging to different schools, movements and countries.

The collection of Spanish pictorial art does not seem to be large, it approximately consists of 150 items, but in comparison to the other museums collections, it looks imposing. We will suggest you observing the works of El Greco, De Ribera, Francisco de Zurbaran, Diego

Velazquez. These pictures could seem a little bit gloomy and you will notice in them the influence of the Church, so popular those years.

Famous Rubens, whose works are displayed in the Hermitage, attached importance to the religion too, but his allegorical paintings are based on mythological subjects – the anthem to life, gaiety and fruitfulness.

In the Netherlands of that times, with the change from Catholicism to Calvinism, secular motives in the art became more spread in contrast to religious paintings, that were forbidden in churches. Works of art were made mostly for decoration of the houses of petty bourgeoisie. In the Hermitage you can see the works of the Lesser Dutchmen, that were made in a humorous style and they will definitely make you smile.

In the end you will be admired by the collection of French paintings. The Hermitage is very proud of its collection of the best exhibits of the impressionist art. Light and shade of Renoir’s works, various landscapes of Monet, townscapes of Pissarro, still life by Cezanne, famous irises by Van Gogh, Tahiti women by Gauguin – all these masterpieces will not leave you indifferent.

The Hermitage is ready to demonstrate you the world art heritage!
